Repertoire of the Berlin Saxophone Quartet

Renaissance, baroque

Saxophones are 150 years old and stem from the fantastical world of the high romantic. Their unusually broad spectrum of sound with their ability for producing fine differentiations in articulation imply that the saxophone can be used for portraying renaissance and baroque music in a more lively manner.

Late classic and romantic

This is the beginning of original repertoire for the saxophone quartet. Initially compositions were hased on experience gained by work on the string quartet style (Singelee). Later on, however, the individual characteristics of the different saxophones could be compared with a rather more symphonic sound quality of the quartet (Glasunow, Pierne). More unusual and lesser known gems of this era namely works for piano, choir and songs - have been arranged tor the Berliner Saxophon Quartett:

Jean Baptiste Singelee: Premiere Quatuor op. 53 (1857) 17'

Antonin Dvorak: Psalmlieder fur Sopran und Saxophonquartett (Bensmann) 6'
